Acclimatisation is a gentle, gradual approach to introducing children to the dental environment, helping them feel more comfortable and at ease during their visits. This process is especially beneficial for children with dental anxiety or those who are unfamiliar with dental care.
The child is slowly introduced to the dental clinic over a series of visits, allowing them to become familiar with the sights, sounds, and staff. This helps build their confidence and reduces any fear they may have about the treatment.
Inhalation sedation, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a safe and effective way to help children relax during dental procedures. The child breathes in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small mask, creating a calm and relaxed feeling.
The nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask placed over the child’s nose. Within minutes, the child feels more relaxed but remains awake and aware throughout the procedure. The effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed.
Intravenous (IV) sedation is a deeper form of sedation used for children who require more extensive dental work or are particularly anxious. This method allows the child to remain in a deeply relaxed state while still conscious.
A sedative is administered through an IV line, and the child remains conscious but in a very relaxed and calm state throughout the procedure. The dentist closely monitors the child’s vital signs to ensure safety.
General anaesthesia is used for children who need extensive dental treatment or have severe anxiety and cannot remain still or calm during a procedure. Under general anaesthesia, the child is completely unconscious, allowing the dentist to work efficiently.
Administered by an anesthesiologist, general anaesthesia puts the child into a deep sleep. The procedure is performed while the child is unconscious, ensuring they feel no pain or discomfort.
